61st & Pena Lift Station, Denver, CO
Panasonic will locate a new technology center and business solutions hub near DIA, bringing more than 330 jobs to the city. The new facility will be part of Peña Boulevard Station, a 400-acre Transit-Oriented Development at East 61st Avenue and Peña Boulevard. The development requires a high-capacity sanitary sewage lift station of which San Engineering performed the Structural design.
While small in footprint, the 61st & Pena Lift Station features many critical design elements. An overhead crane is required for servicing the large pump mechanisms. Structural steel and bar joist framing, consideration of heavy interior maintenance operations, and corrosion protection were key design elements.
The environmental nature of the project dictated the use of a very restrictive ACI 350 code for the concrete design of a large wetwell, 40-feet below grade. To minimize reinforced concrete and associated construction costs, San Engineering coordinated with the City of Denver Building Department to allow for the use of the conventional ACI 318 code for upper portions of the structure.
